42 – Matt Kivel

I’m a big fan of the solo-acoustic singer-songwriter (in case you haven’t noticed yet) and it should come as no surprise that I have an entire music collection section devoted to the likes of Damien Rice, Rufus Wainwright, Jeff Buckley, Ryan Adams and countless others.

So I always love finding a new name to go alongside the ones I already know – and today’s artist is one of them. A graduate of the Cali band scene for a number of years,LA songsmith Matt Kivel has been solo since 2013 and this tune No Return is from his latest album Janus. And what a tune.

Beautiful forlorn guitar picking, subtle shades of brass and heart-wrenching vocals are the order of the day here and it’s wonderful stuff. I’d highly recommend listening to the whole album, to be honest, but this is a perfect introduction if you don’t have the time.

(Spotify only I’m afraid. There’s no video version of this anywhere…)
