I’m not especially well-versed in the ways of R&B and soul music, so there is a whole host of stuff that has passed me by and which I don’t know anywhere near enough about.
Case in point: today’s artist. This is neo-soul singer Jill Scott who has been releasing records since around 2000 and who I’ve been completely ignorant and unaware of until now. Discovered by Questlove from The Roots, she’s been coming up with some awesome-sounding R&B and soul sounds and this one is no exception.
It’s her new single Closure and it’s a stunning piece of work full of keyboard samples, blasting trumpets and, above all, Scott’s amazing vocals that soar over the melody and elevate this beyond a typical piece of soul pop. Fusing classic diva funkiness with sleek modernity this is excellent stuff indeed.
