Day 267 – Sugarmen

Another nice piece of boisterous indie/punk today, this time from Liverpudlian rockers Sugarmen.

Kind of sounding like a mashup between The Cure and Cast, with a smidgin of The Clash and Paul Weller thrown in for good measure, Sugarmen are one of those “could potentially be hugely popular and successful” kind of bands that crop up from time to time. Sort of like The Kooks before they hit the charts; critically lauded and gathering a passionate underground following ready for an assault on the mainstream.

This track – their new single Dirt is excellent stuff indeed. Echoing some of Robert Smith’s catchier chart-courting moments with some resonant, mod-friendly wheedley guitar scratchings, it’s 2-and-a-half minutes of cracking tune age from a band that really deserves to be successful.

Very well-crafted stuff indeed and a pleasant assault on the ears. I’m looking forward to what they come up with in a full LP’s worth of music.
