I’ve got another one of those “bands that seem to be quite popular elsewhere but have done bugger all in the UK” today – Utah alt rockers Neon Trees.
Apparently these chaps hit it big around 2008-2010 after a high profile support slot with The Killers and have maintained that momentum in the years since. Judging by their discography they’ve been a regular feature of the American charts, but with little to no exposure over here; so they qualify for my project on that basis.
Anyhow, that’s a good thing because their latest single Songs I Can’t Listen To is absolutely ace. A little bit late 2000s alt-rock (think The Bravery meets 3 Doors Down), but with a smidgen of 80s electronic-tinged power rock and a dash of boy band – all of the ingredients that shouldn’t work well together at all, but somehow combine to produce something really quite impressive.
Perhaps it’s a guilty pleasure – as it’s not my usual genre of choice – but I really like this tune. See what you think.
