Some lovely, lilting acoustic indie folk today from Floridian singer songwriter Chris Staples – with his frankly gorgeous track Dark Side of the Moon.
This is a sleepy yet striking little song, kind of the aural equivalent of floating away on a lazy acid trip while remaining (thankfully) well-anchored to the ground. It’s reassuring, resonantly powerful stuff that meanders around a simple verse/chorus structure while never trying to be too showy or pretentious – and the result is something quite lovely.
Staples’ impressively simple-yet-poignant vocals are a delight and I’m a big fan of the stripped back guitar part that drives the song forward. Sure it’s nothing desperately original, but when it’s done as proficiently as this, I’m absolutely fine with that.
Take a listen and see what you think. Hopefully you’ll like it as much as I do.
(oh, and go listen to the rest of the 2014 album this is from – American Soft. It’s all excellent.)
