As well as being a bold new contender for the title of most pretentiously-named band on my entire 260-song strong list, today’s act is also a return to happier, shinier music.
This is New York collective The Pains of Being Pure at Heart with Until The Sun Explodes – a cracking slice of indie pop. Part Ash and Lightning Seeds mixed with some classic My Bloody Valentine-esque shoegaze and the sunnier parts of The Cure’s output (you know, the short-lived Friday I’m in Love period where Robert Smith stopped being such a miserable bastard), it’s a wonderful hybrid of flavours.
And what a great tune. 2.26 minutes of explosive, shiny power pop/indie/goth-friendly melody that smacks you in the face like a pipebomb filled with black nail polish and white foundation. I like it – a lot.
(Oh and it’s got a great video too. Hope you enjoy it).
