Day 222 – Toro Y Moi

Something a little different (yet supremely funky) for today from South Carolina musician Toro Y Moi.

This is Spell It Out, one of the standout tracks from his new 2015 album What For?, and it’s absolutely awesome. A proper little chillwave, funktastic tune full of samples, beats and a jangly Doobie Brothers-esque guitar lick driving forward the melody, it’s the kind of song that I could easily see becoming a monster summer hit, given the right circumstances.

I want to drive an open topped low rider down the LA shore blasting this tune out in the sun kissed evening hours. Or put it on the sound system at a pool party just before the tequila comes out. It’s just the kind of infectious tune that deserves to be heard by as many people as possible.

I’ve got to confess, I’d heard nothing about Toro Y Moi before this (although if I’d invested in a PS4 and Grand Theft Auto V, then apparently I’d have heard a few of his songs) – but I really, really like what I’m hearing here. Planning to delve into the album proper when I get the chance.
