I’ve been concentrating on a lot of rock/indie stuff recently, so here’s something very different today instead.
This is Swedish/Gambian singer Seinabo Sey with her awesome 2014 single Hard Time. Dark and broody, this is a sublime gospel-stomper of a tune hinged around a quite stunning vocal performance by Sey, who seems to be channeling some of history’s biggest soul divas in her exquisite delivery.
As a backdrop to her amazing voice, there’s a lot of spooky sonic futurism going on – with dark loops, pounding drums and digital lightning crashes all swirling around in the background. The result is something incredibly intricate and complex, albeit retaining a simplistic songwriting strand throughout its core. I really like it.
