Day 184 – Screaming Females

Unfortunately, it’s going to have to be another short post today. And that’s a real shame because the band that I’ve got in store for today deserves way more than a cursory introduction and pleasantries.

This is New Jersey punk rock group Screaming Females and, to put it bluntly, they’re fucking awesome. No ifs, no buts, no in-depth discussions about the artistic merits of their brand of music – they just kick a huge amount of arse.

This track is called Ripe and is from their recently released album Rose Mountain. And it’s just outstanding. Full of scuzzy guitars and bass and a stunning vocal performance by lead singer Marissa Paternoster that channels everything from Karen O and Sleater Kinney to Joan Jett.

It’s brash, loud, proud and infectious; with a range of emotions and ideas all boiled down and distilled into a 3 minute long piece of awesomeness. Go listen to it. And then check out the rest of the album. And then listen to it again.

You won’t be disappointed.

I heard a lot of Grace Slick in her voice when I was reviewing this record. She’s something special for sure.
