I’ve posted a couple of bluegrass-y, folk-y tunes in the past (check out the early post about Old Man Markley in month 1 in particular) and it’s a genre that I do enjoy listening to from time to time – so I thought I’d throw another one up as January draws to a close.
This is My Oh My by Brooklyn-based collective the Punch Brothers. Kind of a folk roots-y supergroup made up of former members of Nickel Creek, the Infamous Stringdusters and some quality session musicians who’ve played with the great and the good of the bluegrass scene over the years.
The result is a finger-plucking, banjo-laden, fiddle-haeavy soulful sound that is seriously impressive. It kind of reminds me of some of the best bits of Seth Lakeman’s back catalogue, mixed with some Trampled By Turtles, Iron Horse and Jack White’s Cold Mountain soundtrack. Check out the rest of the album this track is taken from too – The Phosphorescent Blues – because it’s all great stuff.
Now pass me my bourbon and chewing’ tobacco. It’s Friday, after all…
