I seem to be stumbling across a lot of Canadian bands on this musical journey, which is a surprise considering my previous exposure to the White North was pretty limited to the Barenaked Ladies and Bryan Adams. Oh, and The Dears as well – they were pretty good, if memory serves.
So here’s another offering – Ontario-based punk group Single Mothers. It’s boisterous post hardcore stuff with dirty licks and rapier-like vocals which kind of sound like an apocalyptic Billie Joe Armstrong spliced with Bright Eyes, only with tonsils ripped out and replaced with rusty buzz saw blades.
This track Half Lit is the first song of theirs I came across and it’s ace. Tightly-bound, nicely performed and brimming with attitude without being too dickish about it (which, I’ve got to confess, can be a major minus point about the genre at times), it’s a great 2-and-a-half minute piece of sonic ass kicking.
If you like it, check out the rest of the album Negative Qualities too. It’s pretty sweet – but I still think this is the best track on it.
