A rare excursion into wholly instrumental territory with the, frankly, amazing afrobeat/jazz/funk/soul/psychedelic rock ensemble The Budos Band.
This Staten Island 9-piece is a musical tour-de-force, harking back to the sleazy, lounge styles of 1970s East and West Coast jazz bars, with obscene saxophone and trumpet lines spayed across some tremendously funky bass and drum work.
There’s a lot of complexity here, combined with a distinctive no-fucks-given attitude that I can’t help but smile at. And this song in particular – The Sticks taken from their 2014 album Burnt Offering – is just outstanding. I just want to light up a big fat cuban cigar, fill a crystal cut tumbler with a generous measure of high-end bourbon and listen to it from a leather ottoman. In a garishly-decorated early-70s players lounge, of course.
Check it out.
