Although the initial point of this project was to find “new” music which would hopefully include a mix of unusual styles and craftsmanship, I’m still more than happy to also discover artists that unashamedly follow the example of past generations.
So with that proviso in mind, let me introduce you to The Youth – a wonderfully unrepentant throwback band from Copenhagen whose music I randomly stumbled across a few weeks ago.
These guys are outstanding and their debut album Nothing But… is a classy, brassy mix of 60s rock n’roll and the kind of R&B that Chuck Berry and Jimmy Reed were thrashing out back in the day. It’s a clear echo of some of the most distinct sounds that shaped the early face of rock and pop music and it’s just terrific fun to listen to.
The tune I’ve chosen is the album opener Come On and it’s it’s a raw piece of 60s garage rock and beat-flavoured excellence. Think of all the up-tempo stuff that The Zombies, The Kinks, The Animals and The Yardbirds were doing and then stick it all in a blender before garnishing some Small Faces-esque vocals on top. Sure it may be unoriginal to the purists but, damn, is it enjoyable stuff.
Hopefully you’ll enjoy it as much as I have done in the last couple of weeks.
