Another slight change of direction today, with a little boisterous indie/R&B mix.
The song is This Head I Hold by LA-based indie-pop band Electric Guest, and it’s a great little tune. Kind of reminiscent of the rave-up R&B that Gnarls Barkley did a few years back, it’s a thumping piano and drum-driven melody with a wonderful vocal swagger harking back to the 70s soul era.
Taken from their 2012 album Mondo (produced by Danger Mouse and chocked full of similar R&B/indie mash-ups) it’s a cracking song that seems to have hit the mainstream in the US and France, but had little effect over here in the UK, bar a couple of low-key BBC sessions. Which, given our love for the Barkley smash hit Crazy and Cee Lo Green’s solo work, seems a little unusual.
I really like it – albeit though the opening piano lick always makes me expect Kate Nash’s distinct voice to come piping over the melody for some reason…
