Day 1 – how to start?

So here it is – day 1 of the 365 New Music Project and I’m bloody terrified. Remember all of that excitement and anticipation that I mentioned last week? Yeah, that’s all gone and, instead, has been replaced by a harrowing fear about the enormity of the task ahead.

Sure it’s going to be a lot of fun and I’m hugely looking forward to finding some awesome new songs, genres, artists and cult acts to add to my musical litany. But the idea of finding 365 of them and posting one per day over the next year (at least) is absolutely pant-wettingly scary.

What’s also daunting is the decision to make about which song to start things off with. After all, this could be the make-or-break moment where people either go “wow, that’s amazing. What a ball-bustingly stonking tune that is – this guy sure knows his stuff” or, more likely, “WTF? This song is the pits and this dude has no clue about music. A plague on all his houses!”

The upshot of this is that I’ve been deliberating the opening song for almost 2 weeks now, and have cycled through at least a dozen options – from the serene and introspective right through to the silly and raucous, and even some bizarre genre mash-ups that probably have no business being put together but sound amazing. However, in the end I’ve decided to just go for some moody, uncompromising rock. This is Two Doves on a Lake by the Archie Bronson Outfit.

Now I know that I’m stretching the definition of “new” a bit, as these guys have been around since 2004, but this particular track comes from their brand spanking new 2014 album Wild Crush. So it’s therefore firmly following the qualifying criteria that I set in my introductory blog post.

Take a listen – I think it’s glorious.

  1. “After all, this could be the make-or-break moment where people either go “wow, that’s amazing. What a ball-bustingly stonking tune that is – this guy sure knows his stuff” or, more likely, “WTF? This song is the pits and this dude has no clue about music. A plague on all his houses!””

See here’s the thing. Music is SO. VERY. SUBJECTIVE. Just cause I’m not adding this song to my current FavesList on Spotify doesn’t mean that a) “this dude has no clue about music” or b) other people who happen to hate my taste in music will be adding it to theirs. I see this task you’ve undertaken as being more an internal one than one for the benefit of others – as it should be. This is YOUR journey, we’re just along for the ride!

So I say, %”has no clue about music”. BRING IT! Can’t wait for tomorrow’s installment 🙂

Thanks Charlotte – for the comment and for some of the tips you’ve given me. There’s a few songs planned for the coming weeks that may seem quite familiar, but hopefully some of the other stuff is of interest too…
